Don’t use the air conditioner so much. Don’t drive so fast. Don’t let your engine idle. Do any of these fuel-saving tips sound familiar? Probably so. You may have even tried one or two of them just to see if they worked. But, there may be one important aspect you are overlooking when trying to save fuel in a Honda, and it’s your tires.

Tires are easily one of the most overlooked parts of a car, because let’s face it, we all just expect them roll when we say roll. But, the condition of your tires depends on whether your car sips gas or guzzles it. Here is some tire knowledge to help you save a some cash.

Rolling Resistance: When it comes to tires and fuel economy, one important term to understand is rolling resistance. Rolling resistance measures how much of a car’s tire sticks to the ground when in motion. This affects how hard your car’s engine has to work in order to make the tires roll. A low rolling resistance can increase fuel economy, while a high rolling resistance lowers it. In order to obtain the best fuel economy, tires should always be properly inflated.

Under-inflated tires: Tires that are under-inflated do not contain enough air. This could be due to a number of reasons from hot temperatures outside to a small leak or major hole. Whatever the reason, under-inflated tires are never a good thing. Tires with too little air have more contact surface with the road. This causes more friction between your tires and the ground. The more friction there is to overcome in order for your tires to roll, the harder you have to push on the gas pedal. In turn, your engine has to work harder, which causes more gas to be burned.

Over-inflated tires: Posing the complete opposite problem of under-inflated tires, is over-inflated tires. Over-inflated tires have too much air, which gives them too little contact with the ground. In order for over-inflated tires to put enough pressure on the road so that they move, your engine must work harder. And, as already stated, an overworked engine burns more gas, causing fuel economy to drop.

Treads: It’s not just the proper air pressure that helps your tires get good fuel economy; it is also the condition they are in. Tires that have a lot of wear and tear have lower fuel economy because they have too much contact with the ground, increasing rolling resistance. And again, the same situation takes place. Your engine is overworked trying to overcome rolling resistance, and gas is forced to burn more quickly.

No matter when it happens or where you are, it’s always a downer when your Honda CR-V overheats. It probably makes you first panic and then become irritated or mad. It most likely also causes you to worry. Worry about what the problem is or how much it is going to cost. To calm your nerves, here are some common scenarios for when your car may start to overheat, and explanations as to why it may be happening.

On the highway: Watch your car’s temperature gauge. Does it seem to rise when you hit the highway? An engine that overheats at highway speeds could be due to problems, such as:

  • low coolant level
  • faulty radiator cap
  • obstructed radiator
  • faulty thermostat

When accelerating: If your car tends to overheat during acceleration or when you are driving it hard, it could mean your current radiator is not large enough or powerful enough to meet your needs. Try replacing your current radiator with a ôracing radiator. This type of radiator will be all aluminum with a multi-core.

If you live in hot climates, another option is to supply your radiator with a coolant-to-distilled-water ratio mix of 70:30.

Constant overheating: Do you feel as though your car overheats every time you turn around? A situation like this can be due to a series of problems, one being an obstruction in the radiator core. If this happens it will lose its ability to cool and flow coolant. Another reason your car may be overheating is if your radiator lacks coolant. Radiators require coolant in order to keep your engine from overheating, so without it, your temperature gauge will quickly get stuck on hot.

Idling in traffic: Sitting in traffic is the worst! Well, until you see your car is also overheating. Double bummer! If your car is overheating when idling in traffic or at very low speeds, you are probably suffering from a lack of airflow through the radiator. First, check to make sure the radiator is not obstructed by leaves or trash. If it’s not, you may have one or two problems:

  • radiator damage
  • faulty electric fan, fan clutch or fan switch

Now that you know a few possibilities as to what may be happening under your car’s hood, here are some necessary steps to take when your car overheats.

  1. Turn off the A/C. Your car’s A/C is located in front of the radiator and warms incoming air. This reduces the efficiency of the radiator, so keep the A/C off.
  2. Turn on the heat - full blast. This works by drawing heat energy out of the coolant and away from the engine.
  3. Pull over and turn off the ignition. Once the engine has completely stopped, turn the key to the ON position (but don’t actually restart the car!). This will allow your car’s electric fans to run, helping to cool the engine down.

Word to the wise. Never drive if your engine is overheating. Otherwise, you risk serious engine damage and very costly repairs.

Okay, so they aren’t as sexy as a sports car or as rugged as a truck, but there are many reasons why owning a minivan can add convenience to your life, and can even be an enjoyable experience. The next time you put down a minivan, here are some reasons why they actually deserve your respect.

Ultimate Passenger Space: Minivans are the ultimate choice if you need to haul around a lot of people. Sure, many SUVs are equipped with three rows and eight-passenger seating, but these don’t provide the same amount of passenger wiggle room as minivans do. Many of these SUVs often can’t even fit adults in the third row, sometimes not even tweens. Minivans, on the other hand, provide the room to make all occupants on board comfortable and content.

Minivans also deliver easy accessibility for all of those passengers they hold, which makes climbing in and out simple. Automatic sliding doors can also be found on most minivans, which makes accessibility even easier.

Excellent Storage: Whether you have a family to tote around or not, anyone who buys a minivan will find storage capacity to be a leading quality. Minivans feature rear cargo bays that are large, but when you lower rear seats, overall cargo capacity truly explodes. Groceries, luggage, band equipment, and more can be stored with no problem in a minivan. Now, what other vehicle can you say can do that?

Hauling Capability: Need to haul everyday items? What about heavy furniture after a trip to IKEA? Got large plants and heavy bags of fertilizer to move? If you’re like many, your first instinct is probably that you need a truck. But this is definitely not true. Just as minivans can haul a lot of people, they can also haul most everything else. Instead of giving up the space of a minivan for the small cabin of a truck, just remember that minivans have both the space and the hauling capabilities to be a double winner.

Safety: For all of the precious passengers and cargo items on board your minivan, safety is of utmost concern for many. On top of the required and necessary safety equipment found in minivans, you will also find them just as full of safety technology as other vehicles. Minivans are up-to-date in all of the latest and greatest tech features like blind-spot warning systems, rearview cameras, and collision and mitigation systems and alerts. So not only are you just as ôwith it as the driver in the red Mustang or silver SUV at the red light next to you, but everyone on board is extra protected.

There are many things to consider when deciding whether or not to buy a car. Where should I look? How much can I afford? Do I even really need a car? All of these questions may come to mind, but another important one to ask yourself is whether you should buy new or used. There are advantages to both, but to help you along in the decision-making process, here is a list of reasons why a new car, like the Honda Accord, may be the best choice.

Custom Made: When shopping for a brand-new car, you have the luxury perk of getting it made exactly how you want it. You get to pick the color, trim level and even get to choose from a variety of optional add-ons and packages. Used cars don’t have this option, so when you opt for used, you get exactly what you find.

Easier Shopping: One major benefit to buying a brand-new car is that it is often much easier to shop for a new car than a used one. If you already know the vehicle, or at least the brand you’re interested in, the finding process can then be handed over to a salesperson. Shopping for a used car can be much more of a hassle for the shopper - internet searches, visiting multiple private sellers, and driving from lot to lot is much easier said than done.

It’s Not Used: Well, obviously. But, it’s still worth pointing out. One reason why it is an advantage that a new car has never had any previous owners is because it has never had the chance to be in any prior accidents, not has it suffered any wear and tear. Having a new car means there is no past history you will have to potentially deal with, instead, it’s future history beings with you.

Safety: If you compare new and used cars, you will find that new cars offer much better safety. This is due to stricter vehicle safety laws that continue to occur over time. Laws like these force automakers to build cars and safety systems that meet certain requirements, otherwise they aren’t allowed on the road. While you’ll easily find safety systems like rearview cameras and blind-spot warning systems in new cars, you definitely won’t in older, used vehicles.

Warranty: There’s no better warranty you can get than one that comes from a new car’s manufacturer. You also won’t have to pay extra for it, like you would have to do if you opted for a used car.

honda-2016-civic-sedanHonda Civic

The Honda Civic is loved for its upbeat personality, charming good looks and excellent reliability. Now, it offers even more with its full redesign for 2016. If you’re in the market for a compact sedan, here are some reasons why the 2016 Honda Civic is a top choice.

Alluring, Upscale Interior: ôThough she be but little, she is fierce. This quote efficiently sums up the compact Honda Civic, due to its impressive passenger and storage space. The 2016 Civic now stands three inches longer and two inches wider - its wheelbase is slightly longer, too. These measurements may sound miniscule, but the Civic makes the most of these inches - and it does so extremely well. Inside the Honda, there is excellent space, even enough to provide comfort to passengers of six feet - whether running a quick errand or venturing on a long trip.

Storage space has been improved in the 2016 Civic, too. Trunk space has jumped from 12.5 cubic feet to an above-average 15.1 cubes - a measurement that more resembles a midsize sedan than a compact.

There is also a good amount of storage spots inside the Honda, including a huge storage bin located under the center console. Whether you need to store a large water bottle or a couple if iPads, they’ll easily fit in this spot.

New and Improved Power: Power has been improved in the 2016 Honda with one of two engine choices. LX and EX trims house a 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired to a six-speed manual transmission or continuously variable transmission (CVT). The EX-T, EX-L and Touring trims all feature a CVT, but are much peppier in performance due to a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Overall, the 2016 Honda’s powertrain is one of the best you can find in the compact sedan segment, providing stellar fuel economy and the performance of a sports car. The turbocharged engine is definitely the more appealing choice, however, due to its impressive ability to combine fun and engagement behind the wheel.

Steering in the Honda is responsive, even lively, and there’s much less body roll than found in previous model years. Interior noise level is also down, which makes the Honda comfortable and enjoyable for all occupants.

Up-to-date Technology: The Civic features user-friendly technology that’s responsive and strategically laid out, such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which provide full smartphone functionality via a seven-inch touchscreen. There are also other items available depending on trim level, such as: 10-speaker audio system, navigation system with voice controls, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning and forward-collision alert with automatic emergency braking.

Like what you’ve learned so far about the fully redesigned 2016 Honda Civic? Check it out up close and personal at our dealership in Washington, PA. Located at 307 Washington Road, Washington, PA 15301.
