Honda Accord

From rent and mortgage payments to medical bills and other expenses, life can be very expensive. This being said, there's no wonder why people want to save money whenever they can. It may sound intimidating, but a good way to save money is to do your own car maintenance on your Honda Accord. Here are some cheap and easy DIY car services to help save some cash.

Battery Connection

If your car won't start, you may want to check the battery connection. This is a simple maintenance service that will only take a few minutes.

  1. Starting with the negative cables first, remove cables from the battery.

  2. Using a wire brush, or old tooth brush, and a corrosion removal fluid, clean the battery posts. You can save money by making your own solution of baking soda and water.

  3. Clean battery terminals with a wire brush or toothbrush.

  4. Rinse the cleaning fluid away with water then dry with a rag.

  5. Starting with the positive cables first, re-install your battery terminals.

Spark Plugs

If any of your spark plugs are not working as they should, a number of problems can occur – from misfirings to poor fuel economy. Replacing bad spark plugs takes between 20-30 minutes depending on how many plugs need to be replaced.

  1. To locate the spark plugs, follow the thick, rubbery wires under the hood of your car. Depending on the number of cylinders in your engine, there will be four, six or eight plugs.

  2. Start at the end of the row of spark plugs. Then pull the wires off the plugs by grasping the wire as close to the engine as you can. Only pull off one wire at a time.

  3. Once the first wire is off, attach a spark plug socket and extension to a ratchet. Set your ratchet to loosen then slide it over the plug as far as it will go. Then proceed to remove the old plug.

  4. To install the new plug, screw it into place by hand. Then tighten it with a wrench.

  5. Reattach the spark wire plug to your ratchet, repeating with each spark plug one at a time until all are replaced.

Fuel Gauge Sender

If your car's gas gauge is acting up or you notice you are running out of gas faster than usual, you more than likely need to replace your fuel gauge sender. This will take around 10 minutes.

  1. To avoid the risk of a fire, first disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Next, locate your fuel tank sending unit. This is typically located under your backseat or trunk carpet.

  3. To detach the fuel gauge sender, unplug the wire harness on top of the sender, or remove the screws and bolts that are holding it in place.

  4. To remove the sender, rotate it until it is loose.

  5. Set the new sender in place and secure it.

Honda Civic

Everyone wants better fuel economy. So how do you get it? One way is to opt for smaller cars like the 2016 Honda Civic. Another way to increase fuel economy even more is to invest in hybrid vehicles like the 2015 Honda Civic Hybrid. But, as the summer months blaze hotter and hotter, even the most fuel efficient cars can suffer. To beat the heat and improve fuel economy, check out these gas-saving tips.

The Most Important Factor. Summer months can see temperatures so high they are unbearable. The only way to combat scorching heat and still manage to get where you need to go is to use the air conditioner. You may praise the air conditioning Gods that have supplied your car with cold air, but if you want to get good fuel economy, the AC can really diminish your chances. Under very hot conditions, your AC can actually reduce fuel economy by more than 25%! This is a huge percentage that causes more gas money to be spent and more trips to the gas station to be made.

You may be asking why you can't just roll down the windows and avoid the loss in gas. Well, here's why:

One – if your car is scorching hot on the inside, chances are outside isn't much better. Opening the windows will, of course, provide some air flow, but you will definitely still melt into a sweaty puddle right in your seat.

Two – rolling your windows down can reduce fuel economy. Opening windows increases aerodynamic drag (wind resistance). This causes your vehicle to use more energy as it pushes through the air. At low speeds, this doesn't create much – if any – fuel loss; however, at fast speeds, this can cause quite a drop in gas.

Here are some ways to improve fuel economy in hot weather.

  • Avoid using the AC more than necessary. Also, set the temperature lower than needed.

  • Park in the shade or use a sunshade. This will help keep your cabin cooler.

  • When first getting in your car, drive with the windows down for a short time before using the AC. By letting hot air out of the cabin first, less stress will be put on your AC, and your vehicle will cool faster.

  • Don't run the AC while idling.

  • Don't idle while waiting for your AC to cool down. AC systems cool faster when the vehicle is driving.

Honda Odyssey

Sooner or later, everyone who owns a car will endure a flat tire. Whether it happens while on the highway or you witness it just as you are getting in your car to go to work – it is always a hassle. If you're like most drivers, you probably have roadside assistance services that will come fix a flat for you . But even if you do, it is always a good idea to know how to handle certain car repairs on your own just in case. And lucky for you – car manufacturers have worked hard to make the tire changing process one that most everyone can do. To learn how to change a flat in your Honda Odyssey, check out the step-by-step guide below.

1. If you are driving when you endure a flat tire, it's important to find a safe spot to pull over on the side of the road. If on a busy highway or interstate, the safest route is to drive on the flat to the next exit before pulling over. Never park on unlevel ground or in the middle of a curve – both spell disaster during a tire change.

2. Once you pull over, turn your hazard lights on. This is the safest way to alert other drivers on the road as to what is happening.

3. Next, gather the necessary tools: car jack, wrench and spare tire.

4. Once you have all of the necessary tools, use your wrench to loosen the lug nuts. (You may need to remove the hubcap to do so.) Do not fully remove the lug nuts just yet, but instead, just loosen them. Do so by turning your wrench counter-clockwise (to the left).

5. When lug nuts are loosened, place your car jack in the correct spot (check your owner's manual or online for instructions). When the jack is securely in place, have it lift your car until the flat tire is around six inches off the ground.

6. Now that your car is jacked up, you can fully unscrew the lug nuts. Be sure to put them into a pile so you don't risk having any roll away.

7. Once lug nuts are removed, pull the tire straight toward yourself in order to pull it off the wheelbase.

8. Place the spare tire on your car by lining up the lug nut posts with the holes in the spare. Then push the spare al the way onto the wheelbase.

9. Put lug nuts back on. Don't fully tighten them just yet.

10. Using your jack once more, lower your car to the ground. Then remove the jack.

11. Once your car is safely back on the ground, finish tightening the lug nuts until they are secure.

12. Once you have finished changing your flat, the last thing to do is to clean up. Place all tools, as well as your flat tire in your trunk, leaving the side of the road clear.

And wallah! You have changed your flat tire all by yourself!
