Originally launched in 1973, the Honda Civic has been one of the key players, one of the rather popular vehicles in the compact cars segment in America. Thanks to its impressive, standing for reliability and practical running costs, not to mention its consistently high level of finish and fit, it has maintained its spot on the top of the market. Environmental awareness, high fuel efficiency rates and appealing performance have also contributed in making this Civic a popular option for the American masses.

While many may say that the current Honda Civic isn't a no-brainer choice as compared to its predecessors, it is still worthy of commendation with its wide range of models, intelligently engineered interior and its solid reputation. If you are one of those practical buyers who are looking for a used but good compact car, then the Civic makes the best option for you as its long existence in the market provide you with a wide array of models that would fit all the needs you may have.

Honda Civic at Present

Coming from a revamp just a year ago, the current Honda Civic has once again received some nips and tucks for this model year so as to address several issues and missteps that the previous models had. Primarily, Honda has upgraded the car's interior design and quality and even included a new array of standard features. It has also groomed the car's exterior appeal, making it look more elite and has retuned its steering and suspension for improved handling. Its safety features have also improved as proven by its high crash test results, making the Civic, once again, among the top performers in its class.

Most of its trims such as the DX, LX, and EX versions are packed with a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine whipping out 140 horses that is mated to either a five-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission. Other higher trims like the Hybrid and Natural Gas models have more powerful engines that produce 110 horses (Hybrid) and 201 horses (Natural Gas) respectively.

Its exterior design may be rather conventional but still aesthetically valuable, taking more pride in the extra pizzazz that it lacked for the 2012 model years of this car. Despite its cabin's almost similar look to its predecessor, having the conventional multifunction display and intuitive controls, there are still notable improvements in its use of materials and switchgear which take the Civic all the more at par with its direct rivals.

All in all, the current Civic is a very competent car. Its unstinting provision of a wide selection of configurations and engines help it appeal to a wider scope of market, while its conventional features such as quick handling and high fuel efficiency rates remain solid.

Used Honda Civics

Before this current generation, considered as its ninth, Honda released its eighth generation Civic which ran in the market from 2006 until 2011. It would most likely be the used Civic you will come across, and holistically speaking, it is a good choice for a used small car.

This generation of Civic provided options of either a coupe or sedan body styles with the usual trims such as the base DX, higher level LX, fully loaded EX, leather-hugged EX-L and the sporty buyer treat, Si. Other than these conventional trim levels, there were also environmental friendly trims such as the Hybrid and Natural Gas, also known as the GX trim.

All trims are equipped with several safety features which include front-seat side airbags, antilock brakes and full-length side curtain airbags. It also offered stability control, but it can only be had on higher trims such as the EX-L, Hybrid, and Si. Its base DX trim was sorely lacking in premium standard features, giving you no choice but to skip up the trim ladder if you want the convenience offered by full power accessories and air-conditioning.

Most reviews and road tests recommend the Honda Civic as a well-rounded vehicle and has labeled it to be a top pick for those buyers shopping cars in its class. This, of course, was made possible by its wide variety of configuration that allow Honda to offer a car specified to your driving needs. As no vehicle is built to be perfect, major drawbacks of this Civic are found in the car's inability to filter out road noise and, of course, its controversial odd dashboard layout.

Honda Civic's fifth generation, sold from 1992 until 1995, was the first to use the Honda VTEC technology. This generation, or the Civic VX as it is more popularly called, offered a 1.5-liter four-cylinder with VTEC-E spitting out 92 horses. Even more powerful was its Civic Si and EX sedan trims which runs on a 1.6-liter four-cylinder VTEC engine capable of producing 125 horsepower. It was originally sold in hatchback and sedan body styles only, but Honda offered two additional coupe trims in 1993, namely the DX and EX trims.
