The Honda CR-V Rules The Off Road Around Washington, PA

Honda CR-V

Among the many crossover SUVs available at Honda dealerships in Washington, the Honda CR-V is one of the most popular. This is due to the family friendly image affixed with the CR-V. See, the CR-V was launched at a time when truck based SUVs were at the peak of their popularity. In fact, it can be credited as the model that shifted the focus from truck based designs to uni-body crossovers. The CR-V is nothing short of a comfortable, practical crossover, but we do feel it gets a lot of undeserved criticism. Therefore, we took a used 2013 Honda CR-V for an off road adventure across Washington, PA's hilly side.

Moderate Terrain

For starters, we drove the CR-V across some unpaved roads that were comprised of sand, gravel and other discontinuities. The SUV surprised us, as it handled quite well even at high speeds. The ride was a bit bumpy, but that can be expected given the firm car-like handling of the CR-V. One thing we did notice when crossing the gravel was that the CR-V did get its fair share of knocks, which can be attributed to the low ground clearance. However, the engine provided adequate power, still keeping its cool and not making any wild V6-like roars.

Extreme Terrain

Here comes the fun part; steep slopes, broken paths and even mud. We were a bit hesitant when going through the latter, since we expected that the used Honda CR-V will get stuck in the mud at some point in time. Once again, the Honda managed to surprise us, overcoming all odds and passing the muddy terrain without any major hiccups. The same cannot be said about the ascent through the hills though, as we did notice some lags and sluggishness from the 2.4 liter engine. Still, the CR-V made it to the top in one piece, which we didn't really expect when we first started the test.

The Honda CR-V is certainly not the best off roader out there, nor can it be ranked among the excellent ones. Though it did hold its own on the tracks, we wouldn't recommend it as a primary off roader. However, that's not what the CR-V was designed for in the first place.
